Chapter 17

Perhaps days after, I had visitors again: Amanda and Cindy. I was somewhere far away and hardly recognized them. Cindy was crying. Amanda went away then returned with a nurse who injected something into my IV tube. Slowly things jelled into focus, then suddenly I was here again, a witness of things. Amanda left to leave Cindy and me alone.

“Dad, are you all right? Can you hear me?” I managed a short nod. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t here to help with granddad. I know how much you loved him. I should’ve been here, maybe I could’ve helped.” A thought flared in me. Yes, with the two of us we might have, but then I realized that it was too late, my father was out of our reach. Tears were running down Cindy’s cheeks and she tried to lie across my chest and place my arms around herself. Things were clear again, but came with an icy detachment. Whatever they gave me brought my senses back but not my feelings or sense of immediacy. Still in my limp embrace, she cried for a while. I heard the beat of her heart, the intake of breath, the suppressed sobs, and felt the shaking of her body. Again, she was a little girl seeking comfort from me.

She straightened finally, wiped her eyes, and regarded me more critically.

“Dad? Dad?” I gave no response. She sat down in the visitor’s chair and just looked at me, her face a puzzle. In time she gathered herself, closed her eyes and leaned toward me. Suddenly I felt her in my mind, probing me. As always, it was a shocking experience. A foreign presence in my thoughts, something clearly separate. I knew she had the ability, better than me as far as mind-to-mind contact was concerned, but to my knowledge she was unable to read me: she’d always claimed she couldn’t. But here she was, loose in my mind, the oddest sensation. It stirred me up a little and for a while we played hide and seek in the recesses. She was definitely looking for me. I hid in my memories and she pursued me. I went beyond her time to memories we didn’t share but still she found me. I don’t know how to describe it. I was there and she was there. We spoke mind to mind, without words. Again, I don’t know how to put it, we understood each other. It was but a split second but it was enough; then she was gone.

Amanda returned. Cindy was sitting on the chair, leafing through a magazine.

“Anything?” Amanda asked.

“Nothing aloud, but he’s going to be all right. He needs to be... away for a while.”

“He’s not lost in time again, trying to change history?” Amanda queried, revisiting an old worry.

“Like the last time?” Cindy asked. “No. This is more like he’s depleted and needs to recharge.” She sounded so sure of herself. Yes, the young are the optimists.

“Well, thank you, Dr. Howard,” Amanda teased, but there was relief in her voice.
